Drills / Tips

Pre-season and development of men's football team when majority of players are new to the sport in the last 12 months. Will pick up the coaching DVD but would like some feedback on the best way to proceed. Plan to start pre-season in a couple of weeks but the playing surface is very hard and the weather will shortly be in the mid 30's before hitting 40's during the summer. Player panel includes all ages and fitness levels.

Adrian - I would concentrate on the basic skills as much as possible. If you are doing any fitness work I would use the ball the whole time and play a lot of small sided so players get plenty of contacts with the ball and get as much chance as possible to familiarize themselves with the skills. The dvd should provide loads of ideas in that sense and you can also adapt a lot of the drills to make them simpler.
I would say the more footballs you have available at training will allow a lot more contacts of the ball and improvements in the necessary skills of the game.

    Cheers Barry,
Core group training since April last year and have loads of footballs, competitive games is what will really make the difference. DVD will be good too as I need to spread the training responsibility for times when I am not at training. Although we have been doing some work through from last year the majority of boys will be coming back in now. Going to start with 2 days a week, Wednesday's and Saturday mornings. Training in the heat alone will help with general fitness. Mixing it up at the moment is critical as they are new to the sport and I don't want it to become repetitive training, different drills in the DVD should sort that issue. Mr Bolger sent me on some ideas too. There will be a real St Brendans look about them by the summer :)
    Thanks again
    Adrian
