off-Season Strength and Conditioning Programme for 16/17year olds
  • hondarile May 2012
Hi all, I would be interested in finding out about setting up an off-season programme of strength and conditioning for 16/17's. I recognise that there is a need to correctly introduce young footballers to the proper way to use weights rather than letting them run amok in the gym, or risking injury by experimenting themselves with ever increasing weights. To paraphrase somebody recently, not looking for weightlifters here but fitter footballers as a result of this addition to their training. I suppose whats needed is someone competent and experienced enough to devise a suitable programme for them incorporating some light weights, planks etc as apppropriate. Does anyone have any experiences of this here ? Any advice welcome. Thank you :/
  • Hondaraile - I would suggest you do exactly what you alluded in that you get someone with expertise in the area of physical conditioning to sit down with you and devise a training program based on the needs of your team, facilities, time, experience etc.
I am not being smart but you wouldnt get a plumber to do an electricians job. At a young age a well planned progressive strength and conditioning program can make a huge difference to a players performance. The same is true of a badly designed programme which can wreak havoc on them at a young age. Lots of information in our articles section here on differing aspects of training

thanks Barry for the reply but i wasnt planning on putting a programme together myself!!. Totally agree that a badly designed programme can wreak havoc on players. Would be a bit protective of this particular group and want only the best for them. There are so many ppl out there with a little knowledge of weights who could do more harm than good. I was hoping to maybe get some feedback from any mentors who may have used the services of a decent conditioning expert already, preferably one who had proven more than just good for this age group. And if possible to find out what outcomes, benefits and pitfalls to watch out for. Thanks again. Would welcome more comments.
  • hondraile - where are you based? Maybe we could recommend someone in your locality to help ya out.
